PolicySnap (“we,” “our,” or “the Extension”) is a Chrome browser extension that helps people understand insurance policy language using artificial intelligence (AI). This Privacy Policy describes what information is processed when you use PolicySnap, how it is used, and the choices you have.

1. Summary
| Topic | What happens |
|---|---|
| Account | No PolicySnap account is required |
| Free summaries | Policy text is sent to PolicySnap’s secure backend, then to OpenAI |
| Unlimited mode | Your own OpenAI key is used from your browser; we do not receive that key |
| Local device | History, settings, theme, free-usage cache, and optional key stay in Chrome storage |
| Selling data | We do not sell your personal information or insurance content |
2. Information stored on your device
PolicySnap uses Chrome’s local storage. This data stays on your device unless you clear it or uninstall the extension. It may include:
- Analysis history — labels for past requests and AI summaries
- Optional OpenAI API key — only if you enter one in Settings
- Install identifier — a random ID used to enforce free monthly limits
- Free-usage cache — approximate remaining free summaries for the UI
- Theme preferences — colors you choose in Settings
We do not access your browsing history, other sites’ content, or your Google account through PolicySnap.
3. Information processed when you run a summary
When you paste text or upload a PDF and request a summary, the content you submit is processed to generate a response.
Free tier (default)
- Text is sent to PolicySnap’s backend (hosted on Supabase infrastructure).
- The backend sends that text to OpenAI to generate the summary.
- The summary returns to the Extension and may be saved in local history.
- Usage counts tied to your install ID and a hashed network signal help enforce free limits and reduce abuse.
We do not intend to keep full policy documents as a permanent content archive on our servers.
Unlimited mode (your own OpenAI API key)
- Text is sent directly from your browser to OpenAI.
- PolicySnap does not receive or store that key on our servers.
- OpenAI’s terms and privacy policy apply.
PDF uploads
Text extraction runs in your browser. Only extracted text sent for analysis follows the free-tier or own-key path above.
4. How we use information
- Provide AI summaries and key-point explanations
- Enforce free monthly limits and reduce abuse
- Remember history and settings on your device
- Operate and secure the free-tier backend
We do not use your insurance text to sell ads. OpenAI processes content under their own policies.
5. Third-party services
- OpenAI — generates summaries. Privacy policy
- Supabase — hosts free-tier backend and usage limits. Privacy policy
- Google / Chrome Web Store — distributes the Extension
PolicySnap’s free tier does not require payment. If paid upgrades are added later, this policy will be updated first.
6. Data retention
- Local data — until you clear storage or remove the Extension
- Free-tier usage counters — as needed to enforce monthly limits
- Submitted text — processed to produce a summary; not intended as a long-term document library on our servers
7. Your choices
- Switch to your own OpenAI key in Settings
- Remove your API key from the Extension
- Clear Chrome local storage or uninstall PolicySnap
- Only submit content you are comfortable sending for AI analysis
8. Children’s privacy
PolicySnap is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
9. Security
Reasonable measures include keeping the free-tier OpenAI API key on the server (not in the Extension package), restricting usage tables, and using HTTPS. No system is 100% secure. Avoid submitting passwords or unnecessary sensitive identifiers in policy text.
10. International processing
Backend and third-party providers (including OpenAI and Supabase) may process data in the United States or other countries that may have different privacy laws than your own.
11. Not legal advice
PolicySnap provides informational plain-language explanations only. It is not legal advice, insurance advice, or a substitute for your full policy documents or a licensed professional. AI output can be incomplete or incorrect.
12. Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date will change when we do. Material changes may also appear in the Chrome Web Store listing or on our website.
